First and foremost, my heartfelt congratulations to the officers and members of the Magsingal Association of Hawaii headed by Mr. Tugade especially to Mr. Eddie Corpuz who composed the Magsingal theme song, which deeply touched my heart and it makes me even prouder to be a Magsingaleno. When I was growing up in Magsingal, tricycles were not around to take us to places we wanted to go to. One good thing about this is that, the air we did breathe was much cleaner and fresher than now. Tricycles maybe quicker to get you around compared to walking but they contribute to the deterioration of air ...

I am a very lucky person to have been given a second chance at life - I have seized the opportunity and have started living life to the fullest.
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was given just fourteen months to live. Pardon the pun, but I am happy to say that I have gone well ...
Armi Oliver-FarinasJuly 4, 2008 - HawaiiI was so glad to read about the May 08 Hawaii Filipino Fiesta featured in our website. But I didn’t see any photos about the Santacruzan so I decided to share some in here. That was me as Reyna Esther! I won the event among 33 beauties paraded as queens. I became the first Miss Santacruzan and got awarded with a trophy and $300 cash. It was the first ever Santacruzan contest here.
Odulino O. TomanengJune 28, 2008 - Indian OceanThe writer below is the daughter of the late journalist Maximo Soliven, the publisher of the Philippine Star before his death two years ago. Manong Max was born and raised in our neighboring town of Santo Domingo. His late father Benito Soliven was our Congressman in the first district of Ilocos Sur during the outbreak of the World War Two. He was the youngest ''diputado'' at that time.....he was called to active duty during the war and served in Bataan under the USAFE...he was a prisoner of war (POW) during the Bataan death march, died with malaria in Capas, Tarlac concentration camp before the Japanese released him. He is a great Ilocano leader, statesman, a soldier and a hero who gave his life to his beloved country. Apo Benito has a big monument in the town plaza of Santo Domingo...taldiapan yo no lumabas kayo.
Mario UgalinoJune 22, 2008 - HawaiiMost of us once we left our country of birth for another country, we always find ourselves thinking of going back. To some of you, you probably left the Philippines for some other reasons and never even thinking of going back anymore. But the majority of us always want to go back home again because we are either homesick of our culture, miss the old way of life we were used to or miss our families and friends we left behind.
Roy Viorge GarvidaJune 21, 2008 - Sheffield, EnglandI’d like to share a Cinderella story to all my fellow Filipino most especially my fellow Magsingalenos. After reading such a remarkable story, it truly makes me a proud Filipino and truly illustrates how artistic and talented Filipinos are. Let this be an inspiration to everyone- DON’T GIVE UP… DON’T STOP BELIEVING!!
Vic AndalloJune 13, 2008 - SydneySometimes Nie feels a bit lost when we are amongst my predominantly Ilocano family. Once we start talking in the dialect, Nie feels like she’s transported to another country. I initially didn’t appreciate how hard that was for someone to be amongst people who spoke a language or
Vic AndalloJune 6, 2008Just as we start talking about some lofty aspirations for the town and whatever else we can potentially do as a community that is out of what we are used to seeing, I could almost see many of us flashing that smirk of cynicism, starting to doubt people’s real motives, and maybe even quietly calling people names while reading some of the posts on the site about the proposed project. And to me that’s acceptable for as long as we keep it at a healthy level of scepticism. Of course we all have the right to be sceptical. We’ve grown up with it.
Benedict IgnacioJune 2, 2008When Vic asked me to write for MagsingalPlaza.com, I felt very honoured by the opportunity but at the same time hard-pressed for a topic to write about. I realised though, as I set out to introduce myself in writing and how I came to know Vic, that it's been eight years since I moved to Australia with my wife Imelda.
Mario UgalinoMay 31, 2008 - HawaiiOne significant noticeable contribution to the Philippines from Spain, whose colonization of our Motherland the Philippines for almost 400 years, is our names. Not necessarily our surnames but our first names.
Vic AndalloMay 18, 2008 - SydneyWe went to Taronga Zoo some weeks ago and this is probably one of the zoos in the world with the most spectacular views. It is nestled on the ridge in one of Sydney’s peninsula-suburbs. For those of you who have not been to Sydney yet, it is touted as one of the most picturesque harbours in the world. What makes Sydney a pretty harbour city is...

This volcano is the most active volcano in the world. It has been steaming and erupting since the 1980’s. In fact, the lava that this volcano spills into the Pacific Ocean is so spectacular that people around the world camp near it to see nature at its best. The lava flow into the sea/ocean makes this island bigger everyday. Maybe millions of years from now the...

Vangie Tolentino-AlconisApril 26, 2008After months and months of preparation and fund raisings, March 28,2008 finally arrived in Magsingal for the Officers and Members of Magsingal Association of Northern California (MANC) who traveled from various parts of the Unites States led by Nestor Viloria. It was their first Medical and Dental Mission in Magsingal, and surely will not be their last.

Arrived at the Auckland International Airport in the early morning of March 21, going straight to the immigration counter to present my passport for formalities. Mario UgalinoApril 14, 2008It has been written millions of time that Hawaii is called, The Great Paradise of the Pacific. Indeed I call Hawaii the Great Paradise on Earth! Its spectacular views, beautiful panoramic mountains and white sandy beaches, makes Hawaii the best place to see while alive. These islands in the middle of the Pacific were formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago.

Jaime AndalloApril 10, 2008I still remember as a young kid, gallera was the place where rich, prominent people in politics, professionals, businessmen and regular people spent their time and money especially during town fiesta, Holy Week and Christmas time. They came from different towns and sometimes, even from neighboring provinces.
A VERY NOISY PLACE, before and after each game. Anyone can enter the place and you don’t need a license...

“Life is what you make it so you owe it to yourself to make something out of it.” I have believed and will always believe in this adage. Some people believe that they are “cursed” if they are poor while some feel “blessed” or “lucky” if they are rich. Some even blame everyone for their misfortunes that have happened in their lives, while some are thankful for the...

Terry Santos-RoblesFebruary 26, 2008Reading up on articles on the website touched us so much and it really brought us back to our fond memories of Magsingal and its people. Frodelio C. PichayFebruary 3, 2008I just arrived from a long and tiresome mission trip outside Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I stepped inside my room and looked around - some of my things scattered on my desk, bunch of soiled clothing waiting to be washed and most of the things inside are disorganized. I don't know really how to start fixing all the mess.

Watching the pictures of Magsingal in our website brings me back to our childhood memories of summers and Decembers spent there. Having been born and grown up in Baguio City, I always found summer trips to Ilocos a treat for us, the five children of Lucia L. Urban of Magsingal and the late Maximino U. Pagador of Buguey, Cagayan.
Seeing the pictures of the meadows, I could almost feel the cool breeze on my face. Cool air then was a relief to our...

by Felicidad Unciano-UdarbeJanuary 28, 2008New Zealand - it has always been my dream country. This is one of the reasons why I pursued Dairy Technology as my area of specialization in my Baccalaureate degree in Agriculture at the University of the Philippines, Los Baos. I kept telling to myself then, "

I cannot describe how I felt when my mother asked me if I wanted to share some of my thoughts for the magsingalplaza.com. I was hesitant at first because I didn't know exactly what the magsingal.net was about. But when I was shown the mock-up site, I got elated and I told myself, "wow, my mother must have a very strong faith in me, strong enough to ask me to write for the magsingal.net."
But do I really have the nerve to do so?

I say that I may not be the right person to talk about our hometown, Magsingal, because I've been away from her most of the time since I graduated from high school in 1978. But the many changes that has taken place since then, particularly with the infrastructure projects, the people's life styles and the people themselves, gave me the thrill to talk about it, my observations, my experiences and a 'peek' of how it was before.
by Odulino TomanengJanuary 18, 2008I would like to share the experiences that I had in my years of sailing, which I believe had made me a better person. Working as a seafarer gave me the chance to make friends with people all over the world, loads of them, both in the ship and on the shore.
